Elder Dial is a tall, skinny guy. He’s very nervous in Bishop Angus’s office. He can feel the sweat running down his forehead and picking up the collar of his shirt. He’s heard rumors of an organization pulling the mission’s strings, but it’s never been directly addressed in his presence. Somehow, he feels in his bones that the organization will be brought up at today’s ceremony. Maybe it’s something in the way Bishop Angus looks at him, or maybe it’s something one of the other boys said. But either way, Dial is sure his world is about to expand, and he doesn’t know if he’ll be able to handle it.
Finally, as if he could read young Dial’s mind, Bishop Angus addresses the elephant in the room. He tells the missionary that he has been selected as a candidate for the Order. He doesn’t expect the young man to know what he’s talking about, but he does expect total obedience as he leads him through the calling ceremony. Anything short of total submission would be considered insubordination, and no disobedience is acceptable to a potential servant of the Order. Close
